Making a referral

  • This non-prescribing site currently offers appointment-only client services However, future walk-in opportunities are currently in development.
  • Third party referrals are accepted from GPs, Social Services, CPNs, housing providers and other professionals involved with clients.
  • Referrals can only be accepted with Client consent.
  • Referrals must be received in writing via post or fax
  • Clients can also refer themselves to any of our services

What happens after a referral?
When a referral is made, a client is offered a Initial Assessment Appointment with a counsellor, one-on-one, for 30-45 minutes to explore/discuss their situation and needs. This is also an opportunity for us to share what we can offer to the client.

Following the assessment, some clients feel satisfied with this amount of input and are discharged. Others would like to continue.

We will keep you informed of progress with the client.

What happens next?
If appropriate for the service, the client is allocated to a counsellor. Clients are seen on a weekly or fortnightly basis. The amount of sessions is usually agreed at the first session, following assessment.

If a client does not attend for two appointments in a row and does not contact us, they will be discharged. It is possible for the client to re-engage with the service in the future if they want to. This can be done by self or agency-referral.

If it is not appropriate for a client to attend this service or the client would benefit from support from another agency, we have a referral route into Mill House, the statutory provider/community prescriber for drug and alcohol services in Cambridge. This referral would be made by Drinksense i.e. in instances of requested or necessary medical issues, detoxification or medication prescriptions.

Links to other agencies
We are also able to make referrals to the Bridge, the non-prescribing drug agency in Cambridge, for information and advice via a confidential helpline, structured care-planned counselling, brief therapies, Auricular Acupuncture clinic and Needle Exchange. A client may also self-refer.

In instances, where a mental health diagnosis or support would be helpful, this referral would be made directly by The Mill House or the client’s GP to the Community Mental Health Team at Auckland Road.

Client confidentiality
Unless consent has been obtained from the client Drinksense are unable to disclose any information to you. This includes telling you if the client is attending our services, unless you referred them. In some cases this will be broadened, see confidentiality policies. Please ring us to discuss this further if you wish.

ADULT OUTREACH SERVICES
Making a referral

  • Third party referrals are accepted from GPs, Social Services, CPNs, housing providers and other professionals involved with clients.
  • Referrals can only be accepted with Client consent.
  • Referrals must be received in writing via post or fax (see the contact page for details of your nearest service)
  • Clients can also refer themselves to any of our services, via telephone attendance at one of our Walk-in sessions (see contacts page for details)

What happens after a referral?

  • For some people one meeting is enough. For others a plan might include:
  • A further assessment
  • Referral to other services
  • Help with immediate problems – usually just one or two meetings are necessary
  • A meeting with a key worker to discuss and agree a plan of support.

More than one of these options may be appropriate, so clients can receive more than one service at the same time. Equally during engagement with the Service the needs of the Client may change and they will be offered treatment options as necessary. All cases are constantly reviewed.
